Fusion Energy at KIT

Pioneering the Technologies for a Sustainable Energy Future

At the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), our Fusion Program is building the technological foundation that will transform today’s fusion and plasma experiments into tomorrow’s functional fusion power plants. By doing so, we aim to provide society with access to clean, reliable, and predictable energy.

Our Mission

We advance the scientific and engineering basis of fusion technology – bridging fundamental research and practical application. Our work focuses on enabling a safe, sustainable, and societally relevant realization of fusion energy.

Our Research Focus Areas

Safety and Materials: Ensuring the safe operation of fusion power plants and minimizing the activation of materials are our highest priorities. We develop and qualify materials capable of withstanding the extreme thermal, mechanical and neutron loads inside fusion reactors.

Breeding Blanket Technology: We deliver technological solutions for one of the key elements of a fusion power plant – the breeding blanket. Our activities range from engineering design and the development of functional materials to pioneering prototype manufacturing and the qualification of components under realistic heat loads.

Tritium Technology: Tritium is the essential element of fusion. At KIT, we develop the physical and technological foundations required to breed, process, and use tritium safely and efficiently for fusion applications.

Plasma Heating Systems: Our plasma heating technologies set world records – from exceptionally high heating powers to the development of giant diamond windows for microwave transmission.

Our Spirit

Fusion pushes the boundaries of technology – we are ready to go beyond them.
